Uptrend, downtrend or sideways: how to read a crypto trend
In short: an uptrend makes higher highs and higher lows, a downtrend makes lower highs and lower lows, and a sideways market bounces inside a range. Always check which time frame you are looking at.
Every coin page on Cryptell shows a simple trend label: Uptrend, Downtrend or Sideways. Here is what each one means and how to see it on a chart yourself.
Uptrend
In an uptrend, each peak is higher than the last one and each dip stops above the previous dip. Prices still fall on some days, but the overall path climbs. On a line chart it looks like a staircase going up.
Downtrend
A downtrend is the mirror image: lower peaks and lower dips. Bounces happen, but they run out of steam below the previous high. Beginners often mistake a short bounce in a downtrend for a recovery.
Sideways
When a coin moves sideways, it keeps bouncing between roughly the same high and low. Buyers and sellers are balanced. Sideways periods often end with a bigger move in one direction, but nobody knows in advance which way.
The time frame changes the answer
The same coin can be in an uptrend on the 30-day chart and a downtrend on the 24-hour chart. That is not a contradiction; it just means a short pullback inside a longer climb. Cryptell lets you switch between 24H, 7D and 30D on every coin page, for example Bitcoin or Ethereum.

Line or candles?
A line chart joins the closing prices, which makes the trend easy to see. Candlestick charts also show each period's open, high and low, so you can see how much the price swung. Start with the line; switch to candles when you want more detail.
Three quick checks
- Are the last few peaks getting higher or lower?
- Does the 7D trend agree with the 30D trend?
- Is Bitcoin moving the same way? Many coins follow BTC.
